Abstract

Digital communications are the basis of any type of data communication. Adopted in the first digital telephone systems, they are part of modern communication systems such as satellites, space probes, the Internet, wireless networks, etc. The inevitable presence of noise and electromagnetic interference can cause errors in the transmitted bits. Therefore, any digital communication relies heavily on error-correcting codes to ensure that the information received matches the information transmitted. Errors in the channel are not only detected but can also be corrected in some cases. Modern communication systems use polar codes and Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes, considered the two most powerful classes of error-correcting codes. For 5G and 6G networks, code improvements are needed to meet the requirements of reliability, speed, latency, etc. of such systems. There is also a demand for efficient codes with reduced length. Both polar and LDPC codes are extremely efficient as long codes. Achieving good efficiency with short codes is a challenging research problem. This research was initiated during the Final Course Work (TCC) at UFSC, in which the interactions between the two types of codes mentioned above were initially explored. The master's proposal aims to expand this work, performing a concatenation of polar and LDPC codes, deepening the performance analysis and investigating new approaches for code optimization.
