Abstract

The aim of the Scientific Initiation is to understand the role of religion in the debate over the Forest Code during the period from 2008 to 2012. For this purpose, it will analyze how actors who publicly identify as religious engaged in the debate over the Forest Code during the specified period and what kind of relationships they established with other national actors associated with agribusiness, the environmental movement, and the indigenous movement. The research will map agents from the agribusiness parliamentary front, the evangelical parliamentary front, and the Christian parliamentary front who continuously worked on amendments to Brazilian forest legislation. To identify and analyze their modes of operation, I will work with legislative documents from 2008 to 2012, as well as news reports and opinion articles published in the Folha de São Paulo newspaper during the same period.
