Abstract

The intensification of nitrogen-based fertilizer use in agriculture has led to nitrate accumulation in water bodies, compromising water quality and ecosystem health through eutrophication and posing risks to human health. Although traditional methods for nitrate removal are available, they present significant drawbacks, such as the generation of waste and environmental impact. In this context, this project proposes a sustainable and innovative approach based on nitrate photoreduction for ammonia production, a strategic raw material for both the chemical industry and energy applications. The study will investigate the use of iron molybdate (Fe(MoO¿))doped with rare earth elements, such as cerium, to enhance catalytic properties, including charge separation efficiency, and structural stability. The research will include the development of a photoreactor optimized to maximize nitrate-to-ammonia conversion. By combining advanced semiconductor materials and an innovative reaction system, the project aims to mitigate the environmental impacts of nitrates and provide a sustainable alternative for ammonia production, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6, 13, and 14. This work seeks to contribute to the protection of water resources and the global energy transition.
