Abstract

The Proclamation of the Republic in Brazil was followed by investments from the government of the State of São Paulo in reorganizing its public education. This led to the 1890 Education Reform, which involved reorienting the training of teachers in São Paulo and establishing a model institution intended as a hub for disseminating new approaches to what and how to teach. In this new educational organization, unprecedented references to practices aimed at the body were introduced into educational processes in São Paulo. Accordingly, this research seeks to understand how body education was conceived and directed for the role of trainee teachers in the State of São Paulo (1890-1919). To this end, an investigation was outlined focusing on the "Caetano de Campos" School- a model institution- and specialized educational periodical press. Methodologically, the work is based on the principles of Cultural History and gestures of cultural redistribution, to construct and analyze sources. Institutional documents related to the School and the periodicals A Eschola Publica and Revista de Ensino will be examined. These records are preserved at the Historical Archive of the Caetano de Campos School and the Public Archive of São Paulo. This body of records will also include texts related to the 1890 Reform that were published in the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo. The hypothesis is that tools for body education were shaped by the practices and experiences at the "Caetano de Campos" School and were disseminated through prescriptions for teachers by the specialized educational press.
