Abstract

The present project aims to develop automated triggers based on machine learning for outpatient healthcare settings in Brazil and assess their capability to overcome the limitations of the manual method of identifying adverse events. Design Thinking is a human-centered problem-solving approach used to tackle complex issues and find innovative solutions. To this end, Design Thinking principles will be employed in the creation of automated triggers, following these steps: (1) Empathy and problem definition, which involves observations and inquiries to understand both the user and the challenge at hand; (2) Ideation, where various solutions to the problem are generated; (3) Prototyping, which involves constructing a minimal representation of the best solutions; (4) Testing, where user feedback is obtained to refine the solution; and (5) Implementation, where the refined solution is tested, changes are evaluated, and scaling is considered. Additionally, machine learning methods will be adopted to identify potential automated triggers tailored to local realities, in collaboration with a specialist in the field. After developing the automated triggers in the outpatient setting, it will be possible to more swiftly prevent and identify potential risks of adverse events and provide valuable information regarding specific patient safety incidents. This will enable healthcare professionals to adopt evidence-based preventive measures, enhancing productivity in outpatient care and contributing to the safety, quality, and effectiveness of the care provided.
