Abstract

The present study aims to evaluate the immunopharmacological effect of curcumin, administered orally, on the acute inflammatory reaction in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Therefore, the following treatments will be constituted: V0 = vaccinated and untreated; V1 and V2 = vaccinated and treated with 100 and 200 mg of curcumin/kg of bw, respectively; NV0 = unvaccinated and untreated; NV1 and NV2 = unvaccinated and treated with 100 and 200 mg of curcumin/kg of bw, respectively. Diets containing curcumin will be administered for 15 days prior to the vaccination stimulus (A. hydrophila bacterin containing 1.0X109/mL administered intraperitoneally at a dose of 0.05 mL). After vaccination, the fish will continue to be fed with the experimental diets for 15 days to induce the acute inflammatory process. The fish will be sampled 6, 24 and 48 hours post-inoculation to collect biological material for study of erythrogram, leukogram, serum biochemistry, cell accumulation in the exudate, leukocyte respiratory activity, acute phase proteins and somatic analysis of the liver, spleen and cranial kidney. However, the correlations between the findings of these analyses will provide important subsidies to evaluate the modulating effect of curcumin treatments on the acute inflammatory reaction (innate immunity) of tilapia vaccinated and challenged with A. hydrophila.
