Abstract The centuries preceding European maritime expansion were marked by major geopolitical and diplomatic disputes with countless social transformations and immediate economic repercussions in subsequent centuries. In a time of constant conflict, alliances established through marriages were fundamental to the survival of monarchical governments. The marriage involving members of the Avis (Leonor) and Habsburg (Frederick III) dynasties, far from being a purely religious event, was eminently political in nature. This research proposal aims to explore these and other international conflicts, as well as to understand the internal and external royal policy of the Portuguese monarchy in the face of these events during the reigns of D. João II, D. Manuel I and D. João III, seeking to delve deeper into how these different reigns impacted and transformed diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Congo between 1482 and 1543. (AU) | |
