Abstract

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a respiratory disorder caused by recurrent episodes of partial or total upper airway obstruction during sleep, resulting in sleep fragmentation and intermittent hypoxia. In adults, conventional treatment includes continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices, orthognathic surgeries, and intraoral devices, but adherence can be low. Distraction osteogenesis maxillary expansion (DOME) has emerged as a promising alternative for patients with airway disorders secondary to maxillary hypoplasia. This study aims to perform a systematic review of the literature to evaluate the efficacy of DOME in the treatment of OSA in adults, considering polysomnographic parameters. (AU)
