Abstract

We are looking for a researcher who has solid formation and track record in the area of Population History and Economic History and who has knowledge and experience in dealing with civil and parish records (birth, marriage and death) in Brazil. The fellow will work specifically on detecting internal migratory flows, mainly exploring records of vital events and statistics relating to the departure of contingents (especially the Black population) from ports in other states to São Paulo. An initial survey demonstrated that, for several municipalities in the above-mentioned regions, there was both slave trafficking and movements of free men of color to São Paulo. Some records also indicate the color variable, fundamental for the preparation of a Black Population Atlas in the state. The exploration of this information will contribute to closing the gap in general population censuses regarding this variable. The combination of analyzes that have contributions from the Social History of Populations will add density to the study of demographic indicators, taking into account the historical context that characterized the coffee march to the Western São Paulo between the mid-19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
