Abstract

This project aims to evaluate the effects of environmental conditions and maternal proximity on the behavior and thermoregulation of Murrah buffalo calves, using infrared thermography (IRT). The study will be conducted on a dairy buffalo farm located in the Vale do Ribeira region, the main buffalo milk-producing area in the state of São Paulo, characterized by a hot and humid climate for most of the year and no dry season. Twenty Murrah buffalo calves will be observed, with behavioral records obtained through ethograms and thermal images of specific anatomical regions. Environmental variables will be collected using sensors, allowing the calculation of thermal comfort indices such as the Black Globe-Humidity Index (BGHI), Enthalpy (h), and Radiant Thermal Load (RTL). Data will be statistically analyzed to identify correlations between behavior, surface temperature, and environmental conditions. The expected results aim to support more efficient management practices through mitigation strategies that promote animal welfare. This proposal is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger and Sustainable Agriculture), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
