Abstract

The etiology of Parkinson's disease (PD) is multifactorial, and current treatments are only partially effective, as the symptoms are not solely due to reduced dopamine release (Albers et al., 2017; Besedovsky et al., 2019; Chahine et al., 2017). Sleep disturbances are among the main symptoms that precede the classical motor signs of PD and include: dysregulation of the sleep-wake cycle, insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, REM sleep behavior disorder, sleep-related breathing disturbances, restless legs syndrome, circadian dysregulation, and obstructive sleep apnea (Videnovic, 2018; Zhu et al., 2020). In the present project, we aim to investigate whether respiratory alterations occur during sleep in a genetic model of Parkinson's disease (MitoPark).
