Abstract

Dental caries is the most prevalent chronic disease worldwide, affecting billions of people, particularly in countries with lower socioeconomic development. Despite being preventable, its incidence remains high and unequally distributed. The disease has a multifactorial etiology, influenced by biological, behavioral, and environmental factors. Popular beliefs-such as the association between breastfeeding and cavities, or the denial of fluoride's role in prevention-contribute to misinformation and hinder the adoption of healthy habits. In this context, health literacy becomes essential to promote autonomy and critical thinking among the population. Digital media, while powerful tools for health education, also facilitate the spread of inaccurate information. This proposal aims to integrate science and communication through science journalism, translating research advances into accessible, evidence-based content that counters myths and strengthens the prevention of dental caries. The journalistic project will highlight scientific initiatives focused on innovative strategies for the prevention and treatment of dental caries, based on research funded by FAPESP and other institutions.
