Abstract

Aesthetic efficacy and adverse effects are dependent on the whitening gel concentration. It has been speculated that the Acquired Enamel Film (AP) and its modification with a sugarcane-derived cystatin (CaneCPI-5) could optimize in-office whitening therapy. The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of PA enriched or not with CaneCPI-5 in in-office whitening treatments, observing its influence on the aesthetic efficacy and characteristics of the whitening gel at different concentrations. To this end, bovine enamel and dentin discs will be divided into 9 study groups according to the following factors: 3-level whitening therapy (1- 35% hydrogen peroxide-based gel; 2- 9% hydrogen peroxide-based gel; 3- placebo gel) and 3-level enamel treatment (1- acquired film; 2- acquired film enriched with sugarcane-derived cystatin (CaneCPI-5); 3- deionized water (control)). To analyze the aesthetic efficacy, pigmented specimens (n=12) will be allocated to the groups and will receive 3 whitening sessions of 45 minutes. 5 readings will be taken on a bench spectrophotometer (baseline, 24 hours after each session and 14 days after the end) to calculate the chromatic change (¿E00) and whitening index (¿WID). The characteristics of the gel will be evaluated by means of diffusion tests using the enzymatic method and H2O2 degradation by permanganatometry. The results obtained will be submitted to specific statistical tests with a 5% significance level.
