Abstract

In recent decades, the territorial dynamics of the favelas have transformed in away that many studies indicate the need to reconnect the phenomenon with theirtheoretical concepts. Currently, it is easier to have a critical view about the stigmas ofabsence and precariousness of these territories because their urban dynamics havebecome more complex. In this new context, the debates on the spatial nature of thefavelas started to enlighten their urban diversity and to pose questions about thepossibilities for understanding them as a whole. This research project proposes toinvestigate the forms of appropriation of public spaces in consolidated favelas throughfield surveys of uses, conflicts, weaknesses, and potentialities. The objective of thisresearch is to draw parallels between different favelas, analyzing territorialities andsocial dynamics, in order to identify urban scenarios that have similar socio-spatial andenvironmental dimensions, even though they may present local particularities. Theaim is to contribute to the studies on the spatial nature of favelas by pursuing newtheoretical and methodological approaches that propose an open and relationalconception of the favela, grounded in the paradigm of urban diversity. This researchis linked to the Centro de Estudos da Favela (CEFAVELA) and seeks to contribute toother ongoing research, deepening the debate on the territorial dynamics and spatialnature of the favelas.
