Abstract

The discovery of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the continuous confirmation of the standard model of particle physics, presents a fundamental problem for theoretical physics. Up until now our understanding was that in order to have a Higgs boson with a mass as the one measured, there should be new states with masses not too far above m_h. Given that the LHC has not discover new physics in Run II, it is necessary to question the bases of the theory. New theoretical developments appear needed to understand the lack of a natural solution to the so-claled hierarchy problem. Furthermore, other important problems appear to be imposing such questioning: the origin of dark matter, the baryon asymmetry, and a better understanding of the cosmological constant, are some of the open problems of these kind. Then, this is an excellent time to reflect on the future of the area and to seek new ideas. This proposal for a stay at the Department of Physics, Columbia University, points to take advantage of contact with theoretical physicists with experience in formal as well as phenomenological aspects of quantum field theories as well as theories beyond the standard model, including their impact on cosmology. During this period we will continue with our lines of research, at the same time that we incorporate new lines both theoretical as well as phenomenological .
