Abstract

Aortic stenosis (AS) is the most significant primary valve disease worldwide, and aortic valve replacement (AVR) surgery is frequently indicated in the population with severe AVR, as it is responsible for increasing overall survival. This condition currently has a high prevalence due to increased life expectancy, and the most common etiology isaortic degeneration, which primarily affects elderly patients (1). New-onset conduction disturbances are common after cardiac surgery-such as postoperative atrial tachyarrhythmias, especially atrial fibrillation-and occur inup to 50% of patients during the in-hospital period (8). Studies on predictors of AF in the postoperative period after AVR indicate that advanced age and mitral valve surgery increase the incidence of this arrhythmia, resulting inincreased morbidity and mortality (9-11) (16-18).In recent years, much research has focused on the prevention of AF after cardiac surgery; however, few studies have identified predictors of AF risk after aortic valve replacement (7).Therefore, the objective of this study is to identify predictors of atrial fibrillation after conventional aortic valve surgery in patients referred to the Valvular Heart Disease Outpatient Clinic of the Heart Institute of the Hospital das Clínicas de São Paulo, as well as to evaluate the long-term outcome and prognosis. This is an observational study that will include patients undergoing aortic valve replacement surgery admitted to the Valvular Heart Disease Outpatient Clinic of the Heart Institute of the Hospital das Clínicas de São Paulo. Data will be obtained from the electronic medical record system from 2011 to 2019.
