Abstract

Dilated cardiomyopathy is a disease with growing and increasing prevalence in our population, and has high morbidity and mortality indexes. Nowadays, the development of new software allows us to analyze, using the conventional grey-scale of two dimensional echocardiogram, the movement of small stable dots present naturally in the myocardium. These little dots, or speckles, can be tracked via the cardiac cycle, which is known as "speckle-tracking echo" (STE), giving information about left ventricular twisting and untwisting during systole and diastole, respectively. Clinical and experimental studies have revealed that this strain is diminished in various pathological conditions, as valve dysfunctions, ischemic diseases, and in the dilated cardiomyopathy itself. The changes in left ventricular torsion measured by STE seems to be an earlier marker of left ventricular dysfunction, and possibly, are more refined indicator of outcomes in this severe and expanding group of patients. The present study aimed to assess the cardiac torsion in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy, and compare these parameters with those already known, in the prediction of cardiovascular events occurred during the follow-up.
