Abstract

The pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA) is classically described as a superficial supratentorial glioma that affects young patients, associated with extensive involvement of leptomeninges. Moreover, its occurrence is related to patients with a long history of epilepsy. Despite their histological aspect of cellular pleomorphism with giant cells, a literature review indicates a good prognosis for this tumor. It is, therefore, a grade II tumor in the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of tumors of the central nervous system (CNS). However, the PXA is associated with high rates of recurrence, anaplastic transformation and death compared to other astrocytic tumors of good prognosis. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of the magnetic resonance image (MRI) of a series of patients with histological diagnosis of pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma, from a university hospital: the Clinical Hospital of State University of Campinas (UNICAMP).
