Abstract

Nowadays, the called "criminal world" of the peripheres of São Paulo disputes legitimacy with other normative social and political apparatus (state law, urban policies, dominant moral order, religious dogma etc.)This project aims to contribute in the contemporary debate on the relations between urban peripheries and crime in Brazil. The ethnography of an specific neighborhood - called Vila Operária - aims to investigate the different forms of territorialization and local legitimation of the drug trafic. The project aims to: i) characterize the changes promoted by the "world of crime" in territory since the 80s until today; ii) study the impacts of this prodution of space and legitimacy in local sociability.
