Abstract

The Itaituba region is located in the central part of the Amazon Craton, west of Pará state, Brazil. It is part of the Tapajos Gold Province, which produced, according to unofficial estimates, more than 750 tonne of gold.Access to the outcrops in this region is limited by factors common in the Amazon, such as the presence of large and dense vegetation and thick weathering mantle. The available geological mapping of this area are on scales of 1:1,000,000, 1:500,000, and 1:250,000. Most of these maps were drawn up based on geophysical dataset with low spatial resolution and limited sampling density along the flight lines. In recent years, epithermal high-and low-sulfidation and porphyry-type gold and base metal mineralization associated with the Paleoproterozoic Uatumã magmatic event were recognized. This might increase the potential of the Tapajos Gold Province for the occurrence of large mineral deposits. Recognition and detailing of the geological evolution of this province has a fundamental importance to developing research projects and exploitation of mineral resources of this region, in which the mineral potential is considered high. Thus, it is essential to use indirect methods of mapping, such as airborne geophysics and remote sensing. In 2009, a geophysical aerial survey conducted by the Geological Survey of Brazil (CPRM) was generated gamma ray spectrometric and magnetic data with high density sampling. These data were obtained by techniques that represent what is currently the most technologically advanced, and provide a basis which, added to surveys in the field, allows the production of geological maps at scale up to 1:100,000. These maps, with greater precision and accuracy, have fundamental importance for the advancement of geological knowledge and the mineral potential of this region. The proposed project aims to produce geological maps at scales of 1:250,000 and 1:100,000, in the Itaituba Project region, using methods of processing and integrated analysis of aerogeophysical and digital elevation model dataset. The analysis will use geological data from pre-existing regional geological surveys, in association with airborne geophysical information extracted from images and digital elevation model. This research is expected to generate new geological information that may support the understanding of the genesis and evolution of the Tapajós Province and the origin and spatial distribution of gold mineralization and their associations with host rocks.
