Abstract

The hull form synthesis or definition is one of the most complex tasks in the design of ships and boats in view of the great number of possible solutions to this surface and the decisive influence that some geometry features have in the ship performance.The advance in the capacity and processing performance of computers induced a great development in the mathematic representation techniques of hull surface, in analyses methods of ship performance and in the numerical solution methods of optimization problems and is changing the way ship design is being conducted nowadays. Hull form design is one of the main aspects of ship design that is being treated as an optimization problem, particularly in the initial and preliminary steps of the design task.The objective of this research project is to develop and implement a computational procedure to determine the best ship hull form starting from the geometry of a systematic series of ships. The hull will be parameterized and controlled alterations of the longitudinal position the transverse sections will be made to change the hull geometry.The ship hull will be optimized considering both resistance and seakeeping. The design and optimization model will be structured through the use of CAD and hydrodynamic performance analyses programs.
