Dental caries in children with AIDS and HIV+: a systematic literature review

Abstract

This study aims at systematizing the knowledge already available in the national and international literature on the experience of dental caries in HIV+ children and children with AIDS. A systematic review of literature on this theme will be performed, following international standards for this type of study, and comprising the following literature databases: MEDLINE (PubMed), LILACS (BIREME) and Google Scholar. Several keywords and synonyms will be included to implement the sensitivity and specificity of data retrieval. Two reviewers will perform the selection of titles independently to implement the study reliability; the advisor will arbitrate the inclusion of non-consensual titles. Selected titles will be classified as to their formal characteristics (journal, type of manuscript, descriptors, country, participating institution and authors), and content (type of study, methodological resources, results, limitations, conclusions). This information will be gathered in an electronic database, which will be submitted to analysis and interpretation of their findings as to: (I) the epidemiologic profile of dental caries in these children, (II) socio-demographic, clinical and behavioral associated factors; (III) initiatives of health promotion aimed at these children.
