Abstract

The clay present important properties such as its great surface area and its capacity of forming colloids when dispersed in water. Therefore the clays awake great industrial interest as catalyst, beyond being used in a series of analytical applications. As these materials present low cost, easy attainment and possibility of being reused, the clay proprieties have been made into object of study in the metal removal in systems as those found in Stations of Water Treatment.The use of this technology presents advantages in relation to others such as the acid washing technology and the chelation technology. The study of new technologies of heavy metal remediation proves itself vital due to the diverse toxic effect revealed when these pollutants are absorbed by organisms. Studies of binary and ternary systems containing clay, organic molecule and metals, have been carried out for various researchers and have been taken as subject of master degree dissertations and doctorate thesis. Experimental results indicate that organic molecules found in the organophylic clay composites act enhancing the chelating effect to metal removal in comparison with pure clay alone. Hence this project aims to study the clay-8-Hydroxyquinoline structured system and its interaction with heavy metals ions, like Cu(II) and Pb(II), which are pollution tracers.
