Abstract

For more than one and half decade the research group on Amorphous and Nanocrystalline Metallic Materials from DEMA-UFSCar have work on new alloys compositions with high glass forming ability. In these works was and still is present the challenger to develop procedures and processes which allow the production of bulk samples (in millimeters in scale) with exact chemical composition as specified and with imposition of high cooling rate in whole sample volume. The present work plan for a Scientific Iniciation student is part of this work and has the goal to develop new compositions with high glass forming ability from Cu-Zr-Al system; and also is focused on the development of technique to processing these new compositions by casting in permanent metallic mould. The work plan includes the alloys preparation and its processing by casting methodology. The alloys compositions have been selected by using semi-empirical criteria based on topological instability and electro negativity average difference among the composition elements; these alloys compositions have been presented in previous work that are able to glass formation when processed by imposing very high cooling rates (106K/s )in ribbons shaped samples with microns dimensions. The present work is part of the thematic project (proc. n. 2005/59594-0) Properties of Amorphous, Metastable and Nano-Structured Metallic Alloys.
