Abstract

Present work is motivated by the recent hydrocarbon discoveries placed at offshore deepwater depths. For this reason, new technically feasible and cost-effective solutions are demanded to extract petroleum from those hydrocarbon reservoirs. Present study regards underwater pipelines placed over an uneven seafloor in presence of sea currents acting on that portion of the pipeline with free spans. Therefore, dynamic loads can occur as a consequence the structure may oscillate in the same direction of current (in-line) and transverse directions. This dynamic response is mainly caused by current load, the drag and inertia effect mainly at in-line direction, and vortex induced vibration and lift effect mostly at transverse direction. The present work gives an introduction for fundamentals of involved hydrodynamics and pipeline behavior with free span. Numerical solution to the equation of pipeline dynamic behavior and analysis of results will be present.
