Abstract

Dispersion plume caused by the disposal of dredged material in navigation channels of ports are increasingly in coastal areas near port regions, which requires attention to the potential impacts that may cause on marine environment. The work of collecting data for the conduct of monitoring the activity of disposal of material has high cost and require lengthy studies. To make it viable economically and improve the capacity to assess the impacts caused by the disposal, the use of numerical modeling to simulate the dispersion of the sediment plumes is today a methodology widely used in dredging activities because of its great functionality and, relatively, low cost. This project aims to apply the numerical model for dispersion of sediments plume STFATE (Short-term FATE) for the activities of disposal of dredged material in the coastal region of Santos, using hydrodynamics simulations through the model POM implemented for this area, and characteristics of sediment disposed obtained by measurements in situ.
