Taxonomic revision and phylogenetic relationships in Pyromaia Stimpson, 1871 (Crustacea: Brachyura: Majoidea)

Abstract

Pyromaia, a genus of majoid crabs represented by six nominal species, is found only in the Americas, occurring in Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Recent phylogenetic hypotheses, based in morphological characters, revealed that Pyromaia stricto sensu is paraphyletic. Despite the apparent paraphyletism, Pyromaia forms a monophyletic clade with Anasimus species. However, it is clear that the characters proposed so far are not sufficient to resolve satisfactorily the relationships between Pyromaia and Anasimus. Furthermore, some species of Pyromaia, in special P. tuberculata, are in need of revision as they have a confusing taxonomic situation. Within this context, the aims of this study are: (i) perform a phylogenetic analyses of Pyromaia species including new data sources (molecular analyses); (ii) increase the data matrix of morphological characters, including the study of new morphological complexes of adults; (iii) review the taxonomy of the species of Pyromaia and Anasimus based on the achievements of the phylogenetic analyses.
