Abstract

The urinary tract is very resistant to bacterial infection, however cystitis are common in dogs. Among the urinary tract defense mechanisms are included several aspects related to the urine composition, that play an important role on bacterial inhibition. By the other hand, it is possible that certain urinary electrolytes concentrations give some support for bacterial growth in vivo, as it is seeing in vitro. Objective: to evaluate a possible correlation between bacteriuria and sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphate, and urea urinary excretion in dogs with signs of urinary tract infection and with normal or altered sodium fractional excretion. Methods: forty eligible dogs will be evaluated (30 dogs presenting cystitis and 10 dogs with no bladder infection). The animals will be submitted to the routine urological examination and urine microbiologic examination by means of dipslide culture technique will be done. The parameters to be analyzed will include urinary concentrations of sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphate and urea, and sodium fractional excretion. Possible correlations between bacterial cystitis and urinary electrolytes concentrations, and sodium fractional excretion will be statistically analyzed. (AU)
