Abstract

In the entire world, 1.2 million people die every year as result of traffic injuries; the amount of people that is injured or disabled reaches 50 million, according to World Health Organization. In this way, the traffic injuries represent a serious world public health problem. In Brazil, the reality is not different, for the reason that around 30 thousand die and 400 thousand is injured by year. In this country, there is an aggravating circumstance: a traffic injury, generally, is faced as a fatality. At São Carlos - SP city, the study case, occur around 3.5 thousand traffic injuries, nearby 850 injured and 5 deaths by year. The pedestrian crashes registered, reaches around 150 by year. The general cost of injuries in Brazil reaches around 30 billion of reais (R$). With no doubt this petrified situation demands changes of posture by the responsible authorities in federal, state and municipal level. At São Carlos, the Departamento de Engenharia Civil of UFSCar, has been, for many years, promoting studies, through the Núcleo de Estudos em Gestão e Comportamento do Trânsito - NEGEC-Tran, looking for offer a contribution in the direction of reduce the traffic injury problems. In this aspect, this work has as general objective to analyze, with the assist of the tools Geographic Information System (GIS) and Spatial Analysis, the traffic injuries involving pedestrian (pedestrian crash), between 2001 and 2006. Its concern, as contribution, offer detailed subsidies to the local public authority of São Carlos, with the objective of reduce the serious problems in the field of traffic security.
