Abstract

Metabolic syndrome (MS) is characterized by several cardiovascular risk factors such as central obesity, hyperglycemia, hypertension, elevated triglycerides and reduced levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL). Rats genetically modified (Zucker obese) have been used as experimental models for obesity, but over time present: insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and hypertension, so these animals can also be a good model for studying the metabolic syndrome. However, there are controversies in the literature regarding the time at which this animal has the criteria related to metabolic syndrome. The objective is to check the time of installation of metabolic syndrome in obese Zucker rats. Will be used male rats, Zucker, and controls, Lean. The experimental procedures will be performed after an adaptation period of 4 weeks dietary and environmental conditions at the vivarium of the Faculty of Medicine of Botucatu, nutritional analysis, cardiovascular and metabolic-hormonal will be performed at the age of 8, 12, 16, 24 and 34 weeks. At the end of 34 weeks the animals are sacrificed. (AU)
