Abstract

Taking into account the variety of meanings attributed to evidential expressions, this research project investigates the question to what extent the grammatical expression of evidentiality in a variety of languages may be explained in terms of the threefold distinction proposed by Hengeveld and Mackenzie (2008) and in terms of the hierarchical relationship existing between them. According to the evidential classification presented in the Functional Discourse Grammar, it is possible to establish a number of predictions concerning the interaction among the evidential categories themselves, and the interactions between evidentiality and other grammatical categories, such as emphasis, epistemic modality, negation, and tense. Those predictions will be investigated in this project. (AU)
