Graduated in Engenharia Mecânica from Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (1977), master's at Aerospace Engineering from Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (1983) and Ph.D. at Mechanical Engineering from University of Liverpool (1991).
