Sylvia Ficher holds a BArch from the FAU/USP (1972), a Master of Science in Historic Preservation from the Graduate School of Architecture and Planning, Columbia University (New York, 1978) and a PhD in Social History from the FFLCH/USP (1989). She was a Visiting Researcher at Columbia University (1991) and has a Post-Doctorate in Sociology from the École des Hautes Etudes en Science Sociales (Paris, 1992). Professor Emeritus and Senior Researcher at the University of Brasília, CNPq Senior Researcher and coordinator of CNPq Research Group 'Brasil, Brasília: Chapters in the History of Architecture and Urbanism', she conducts theoretical and historical studies on urbanization and urbanism, aesthetics, architecture and architectural criticism. To date, she has supervised 18 Ph.D. theses and 27 M.A. dissertations, as well as many post-doctoral supervisions. In addition to several book chapters, articles in specialized journals, and papers in academic events, she is the author of Arquitetura moderna brasileira (1982, with Marlene Milan Acayaba); GuiArquitetura Brasília (2000, with Geraldo Nogueira Batista); and Guia de Obras de Oscar Niemeyer: Brasília 50 anos (2010, with Andrey Schlee). Her book Os arquitetos da Poli (EDUSP FAPESP, 2005) received the Clio Award from the São Paulo Academy of History. Among her numerous editorial activities, it is noteworthy the translation/technical revision of circa fifteen books in the field of architecture and urbanism and the coordination of the Collection Architecture and Urbanism, at the UnB University Press, and the Collection Historical Brasília 50 years, at the FAU/UnB. She has acted as referee in numerous academic events, such as the 10th Pan-American Congress of Architects (1994), the 6th International DOCOMOMO Conference (1999), the 4th São Paulo International Biennial of Architecture (1999), the 27th World Congress of Architects - UIA RIO (2021), and was Honorary President of the 6th Conference of the National Association for Research and Graduate Studies in Architecture and Urbanism (2021). She is an ad hoc consultant for the main funding agencies in the country, such as CNPq, CAPES, FAPESP, FAPERJ and FAPDF, and a member of the board of directors of the Columbia University Alumni Association of Brazil since its founding in 1998, the DOCOMOMO International and the National Association for Research and Graduate Studies in Architecture and Urbanism, ANPARQ.
