Sylvia Ficher is an architect and specialist in Architectural and Urban Heritage (FAU/USP, 1972 and 1974), holds a Master of Science in Historic Preservation (Graduate School of Architecture and Planning, Columbia University, New York, 1978), and a PhD in Social History (FFLCH/USP, 1989). She was a visiting researcher at Columbia University (1981) and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Sociology at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris (1982). Currently, she is Professor Emeritus and Senior Researcher at the University of Brasília..At CNPq, she coordinates the research group Brazil, Brasília: Chapters in the History of Architecture and Urbanism, held a 1A Researcher productivity grant, and currently holds a Senior Researcher productivity grant. Her academic work focuses on theoretical and historical studies of urbanization and urbanism, aesthetics, architecture, and architectural criticism. To date, she has supervised 18 PhD theses, 29 Masters dissertations, and several Postdoctoral projects. In addition to numerous book chapters, peer-reviewed articles, and academic conference presentations, she is the author of Arquitetura moderna brasileira (with Marlene Milan Acayaba, 1982), GuiArquitetura Brasília (with Geraldo Nogueira Batista, 2000), and Guia de obras de Oscar Niemeyer: Brasília 50 anos (with Andrey Schlee, 2010). Her book Os arquitetos da Poli (EDUSP FAPESP, 2005) received the Clio Prix from the São Paulo Academy of History. She has also made significant contributions to editorial work, including the translation and technical review of around fifteen books in the fields of architecture and urbanism. She coordinated the collections Coleção Arquitetura e Urbanismo (UnB Press) and Coleção Brasília Histórica 50 Anos (FAU/UnB). Her participation in scientific and academic committees includes the 6th International DOCOMOMO Conference (1999), the 4th International Architectural Biennial of São Paulo (1999), the 24th Pan-American Congress of Architects (2013), the 27th World Congress of Architects UIA Rio (2020), and was Honorary President of the 6th ANPARQ Conference (2021). She is an ad hoc consultant for Brazil's main research funding agencies, including CNPq, CAPES, FAPESP, FAPERJ, and FAPDF. A member of the Board of the Columbia University Alumni Association of Brazil since its founding in 1998, and of the Advisory Board of the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN, 2023-2026), she is an affiliate of DOCOMOMO International and of the National Association of Research and Postgraduate Studies in Architecture and Urbanism (ANPARQ).
