Suzana Pereira Nunes

Suzana Nunes is Professor of Chemical and Environmental Science and Engineering at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), a leading international science university in the Middle East, where she has been also Vice Provost of Faculty and Academic Affairs (2021-2024). She is a member of the Sao Paulo Academy of Science, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, honorary member of the European Membrane Society, and received in 2023 the international L'Oreal UNESCO Award For Women in Science recognized for her worldwide contribution to chemistry. In 2024 she was elected member of the TWAS (World Academy of Science). Her main scientific activity is the development of polymeric membranes for sustainable separations with the aim of reducing emissions in the chemical industry, water, and energy sectors. Among the challenges of his research are also the development of highly stable and ultraselective membranes for use in organic solvents. Before joining KAUST in 2009, she was head of the department of membranes for sustainable energy at one of the Helmholtz Research Center in Germany, having coordinated European and German strategic projects on membranes for sustainable energy for 12 years. Prior to that, she was Assistant and Associate ("Livre Docente") professor at the Institute of Chemistry at UNICAMP until 1997. She was a postdoc and Humboldt Fellow at the University of Mainz, Germany in 1985/1986, working in thermodynamics and rheology of polymeric solutions. She graduated in Chemistry from the State University of Campinas (1980). She completed her master's and doctorate at the same university, graduating with a PhD in Chemistry in 1985.
