She earned her undergraduate degree in Geophysical Sciences Meteorology from the University of Lisbon (2005), her Ph.D. in Geophysical Sciences from the University of Lisbon (2011), and completed her postdoctoral research at INPE (National Institute for Space Research, Brazil). Since 2015, she has been a professor in the Department of Meteorology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and the coordinator of the Laboratory for Environmental Satellite Applications (LASA). Since 2018, she has served as a collaborating researcher at the Dom Luíz Institute and the Forest Research Center, both at the University of Lisbon.Since 2020, she has been the Deputy Director for International Relations at the Institute of Geosciences at UFRJ. Also since 2020, she has been a member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Expert Committee on Climate Monitoring, representing Brazil.In 2023, she received the 3M Latin American Women in Science Award in recognition of her contributions to satellite-based fire monitoring. She holds a Level B research grant from CNPq (Brazil's National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) and is recognized as a "Scientist of Our State" by FAPERJ (Rio de Janeiro Research Foundation).She is an associate editor of the journals Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS) and npj Natural Hazards Nature. She is the creator of the ALARMES Platform (https://alarmes.lasa.ufrj.br/), designed to support the management, prevention, and control of fires and burnings in Brazil.She serves as a consultant for PREVFOGO/IBAMA at the National Integrated Multiagency Operational Coordination Center (Ciman), and as a consultant for Brazil's Ministry of the Environment in the Special Secretariat for Deforestation Control and Environmental Land Management, contributing to the national emergency coordination room for wildfire response.She is currently a member of the working groups of the National Committee for Integrated Fire Management (COMIF). She also participates in the Extreme Heat Working Group led by Vigidesastres Nacional (CGPRESP/DEMSP/SVSA/MS), which aims to develop National Guidelines for preparation, surveillance, and health response to extreme heat events, in light of the increasing frequency of extreme weather and its impacts on public health.Her research areas include satellite monitoring of wildfires and burnings, fire danger weather forecasting, extreme climate events such as heatwaves and droughts, and their impacts on vegetation and public health.
