Graduate in Medicine from Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC, 1994), master's at Pathological Anatomy and Clinical Pathology from Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP, 1999) and ph.d. at Clinical Medicine from Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP, 2005). He is presently Full Professor at Botucatu School of Medicine, UNESP. Has experience in Medicine, focusing on Infectious and Parasitic Illnesses, acting on the following subjects: health surveillance, infection control, healthcare epidemiology and multidrug-resistant organisms. During COVID-19 pandemics, his research has used mathematical models, medical geography and time series analysis to understand the epidemiology of SARS-Covis-2 (with emphasis on areas far from great metropolitan regions) and the effectiveness of public policies for preparedness and response. He is the prinicipal investigator of the Botucatu AztraZeneca vaccine effectiveness project, one of the greatest studies in COVID-19 vaccines worldwide. He is currently the Dean of Botucatu Medical School, São Paulo State University (UNESP) and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Hospital Infection and PLoS One (IF/2022=3.75.
