Birthplace: Brazil

Osvaldo Cabral as a micrometeorologist is developing studies about the interactions in the soil-plant-atmosphere system with emphasis in agricultural surfaces and land use changes. His career started in the 80´s during the Amazon Region Micrometeorological Experiment (ARME) in Manaus, when he worked with the research team from the Institute of Hydrology (IH-UK now CEH), notably with Professor John Roberts about the tropical forest plant physiology/water relations. In the years 1985 and 1987 he joined the Amazon Boundary Layer Experiment (ABLE) funded by NASA, with Dr. David Fitzjarrald (ASRC-SUNYA) on the investigation of turbulent fluxes of heat and water from the tropical forest. During 1991-1993 he integrated the research team of the Anglo-Brazilian Amazonian Climate Experiment Study (ABRACOS), coordinated by the IH-UK, when the micrometeorology and plant physiology of tropical forests and pastures (Manaus and Rondônia) have been intensively studied. At this time he was header of the Technical Support of the Embrapa Research Center in Manaus, responsible for the laboratories. He is a senior researcher at Embrapa since 1983 and at Meio Ambiente Research Center since 1996, and is developing a tight cooperation with Professor Dr. Humberto Rocha from University of São Paulo, in the FAPESP Thematic Projects about the water and carbon cycle using flux towers in areas of sugar cane, eucalyptus, savanna and tropical Atlantic forest; as well in the ?Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Interaction Experiment in Amazonia (LBA)?, during the establishment of the Tocantins savanna flux tower site.
