Sergio Ulhoa Dani

CV with scientific contributions - Born in Belo Horizonte in 1965, Sergio Ulhoa Dani holds dual Brazilian and Italian citizenship. After graduating in medicine at UFMG and founding the Acangau Foundation, he moved to Hannover, Germany in 1991 for doctoral studies and to Osaka, Japan in 1995 for postdoctoral studies. In 1996, he returned to Brazil, where he worked at Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and University of São Paulo, and founded the first Brazilian experimental gene therapy centre, biotech companies including Excegen Genetica SA, and the Medawar Institute for Medical and Environmental Research at Acangau Foundation. In 2010, he moved back to Germany and resumed his medical activities. In 2014, he moved to Switzerland to take an assistant physician position at the Medical Oncology Department in Bern University Hospital. Among his earlier scientific contributions is the unification of the pathology of neuritic plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in neural degeneration and Alzheimer s disease. Later on, he found an association between chronic low level environmental arsenic and the incidence and prevalence of Alzheimer s disease. In Heidelberg, he described the osteoresorptive mechanism of arsenic intoxication in a patient with breast cancer and menopausal osteoporosis. Sergio Dani s contributions in the field of genetics include the observation of a tumor suppressor effect of the common mtDNA4977 deletion mutation, the association of a growth hormone variant with a thrifty phenotype under nutrient restriction, and the development of the new field of Pairomics. He has published more than 30 scientific studies in specialized journals, 4 books, 200 scientific articles for the general public. He has received over 6 scholarships, 10 grants, 4 prizes and 1 medal in science and technology, filed 4 patents, and contributed to the creation and maintenance of two nature conservancy units totalling 9 thousand hectares of savannah woodlands in central Brazil. Lebenslauf - Sergio Dani studierte von 1984-1991 Medizin an der Bundesuniversität Minas Gerais und der Universitätsmedizin Göttingen, und promovierte von 1991-1994 im Institut für Neuropathologie der Medizinischen Hochschule Hannover unter der Leitung vom PD Akira Hori und Prof. Gerhard Walter. Nach seiner Promotion setzte er von 1995-1996 als Monbusho-Stipendiat seine wissenschaftliche Laufbahn im Institut für Proteinforschung der Osaka Universität unter der Leitung von Prof. Kazuaki Yoshikawa fort. Im Jahr 1996 kehrte er nach Brasilien zurück und arbeitete von 1996-1997 als FAPESP-Stipendiat im Labor für Onkogenetik vom Dr. Andrew Simpson im Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in São Paulo. Anschlie end erhielt er eine FAPESP-Stelle als Junior Professor an der Abteilung Genetik der Medizinischen Fakultät USP zu Ribeirão Preto, wo er 1999 sich im Fach Genetik habilitierte. In den Jahren 2000-2002 baute er das AADM Gentherapie Forschungszentrum in Ribeirão Preto auf. Im Jahr 2003 nahm er eine Einladung von Investoren nach Belo Horizonte an, und gründete die start-up Firma Excegen Genetica SA, die er bis 2009 leitete. Im Jahr 2010 kehrte er nach Deutschland zurück und startete seine klinische Laufbahn. Als Assistenzarzt arbeitete er in mehreren Kliniken und Universitätskliniken in Kassel, Heidelberg, Tübingen, Worms und Bremen mit Abschnitten in Neurologie, Klinischer Chemie, Innerer Medizin, Psychiatrie und Allgemeiner, Visceraler und Onkologischer Chirurgie. Seit 2014 arbeitet er als Assistenzarzt in Weiterbildung zum Onkologe im Inselspital Bern. Die wissenschaftlichen Schwerpunkte von Sergio Dani sind die Anwendungen der Genetik in der Diagnostik und Therapie von Krebserkrankungen, sowie die klinische Toxikologie von Arsen, einem ubiquitären Krebserregender der Gruppe 1 (IARC-International Agency for Research on Cancer).
