Graduated in Medicine, Faculty of Medicine (1970). Did his Ph.D. at the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Manitoba, Canada (1977) and was Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute for Medical Research in Mill Hill, London. He is currently Full Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Immunology, Federal University of Minas Gerais and Scientific Director of GENE - Núcleo de Genética Médica de Minas Gerais. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS), Academia Mineira de Medicina and Academia Mineira de Pediatria. He is specialized in Human and Medical Genetics, acting on the doing research on the following topics: human genomic diversity and evolution, formation and structure of the Brazilian population and application of PCR-based tests for diagnosis of human diseases.
