I am a Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at the School of Medicine and a researcher in the Infectious and Parasitic Diseases Research Program at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), Brazil. My main area of research is infectious and parasitic diseases, with a particular focus on vector-borne illnesses such as visceral leishmaniasis and Zika virus infection. I have conducted studies on the ecology of parasite-vector interactions, particularly involving Leishmania parasites and phlebotomine sand flies. More recently, my research has centered on the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of pregnant women infected with the Zika virus in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. This ongoing cohort study also investigates risk factors associated with Zika virus infection and congenital Zika syndrome. Additionally, I have developed research on the clinical and epidemiological aspects of syphilis and perinatal Zika virus infection. I have served as Principal Investigator (for studies on Zika and syphilis) and Co-Principal Investigator (for studies on parasite-vector ecology). I have experience in molecular diagnostic techniques, particularly PCR, gained during my doctoral studies at the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. Currently, I am the lead investigator in two studies that apply spatial data analysis to explore the distribution of infectious diseases, focusing on spatial patterns and correlations between incidence and socioeconomic, demographic, and environmental variables in the city of Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul. The main diseases investigated in these studies include visceral leishmaniasis, syphilis, whooping cough, and Zika virus infection. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
