Vinícius Augusto Guerra Spira

I hold a Master's and PhD in Social Anthropology from FFLCH USP, awarded in 2014 and 2022 respectively. Additionally, I earned degrees in Architecture from FAU USP in 2004 and in Social Sciences from FFLCH USP in 2011. I am an active member of Laboratório de Antropologia da Religião (LAR - IFCH - Unicamp), "Grupo de Trabalho Antropología de las comunidades, los futuros y las utopías en Latinoamérica" and Coletivo ASA - Artes, Saberes e Antropologia (FFLCH - USP). My anthropological research integrates techniques and knowledge from architecture, photography, and role-playing games. Currently, I am in the process of preparing a post-doctoral research project that aims to explore how the Zen tradition can provide responses to the ongoing serious climate changes in the world. My doctoral research involved an ethnographic study of everyday challenges and social mobilizations in favelas and occupations in Vila Maria. I examined these issues in light of possibilities for radical political action within the context of the Anthropocene, operating under the premise that a persistent crisis on a planetary scale necessitates a fresh perspective on urban social struggles. Beyond advocating for the right to housing and the city, these struggles offer glimpses into ways of life that are radically different from those typically considered feasible under the dominant influence of the state and the market. During my Master's studies, I investigated how the state establishes its presence in impoverished areas of the São Paulo metropolis through the implementation and management of Unified Educational Centres (CEUs).
