He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo in 1981, completed his Medical Residency in Psychiatry in 1984 and a Doctorate (PhD) in Medicine in 1996. Since 1986 he has been an Assistant Physician hired by the Institute of Psychiatry of Hospital das Clínicas da FMUSP (IPq HCFMUSP ). In 1983, he founded the Affective Disorders Study Group (PROGRUDA), which he directs until today and is a Full Professor of the Postgraduate Program of the Department of Psychiatry at FMUSP (since 1996). He was the President Director of the Centor de Estudos Instituto de Psiquiatria (CEIP) at IPq HC FMUSP (2013 - 2019). Since 1986 my work focused on clinics, neurobiology of Mood Disoreders (Depressive Disorders and Bipolar Disorders), and treatment which includes psychopharmacology of antidepressant and mood stabilizers.
