He holds a specialization in Anesthesiology from the Brazilian Society of Anesthesiology (SBA), in Intensive Care from the Brazilian Association of Intensive Medicine (AMIB), and a PhD from the University of São Paulo School of Medicine in 1986. He coordinated the Anesthesiology and Intensive Care activities of the Hospital das Clínicas Complex of FMUSP (InCor, ICHC) and ICESP. He developed Clinical Research activities in the areas of: Volume Replacement; Hemodynamic Monitoring; Mechanical Ventilation; Sepsis; High-Risk Surgical Patients; Experimental Hemodilution at the Medical Research Laboratory of FMUSP (LIM-08). He was acting director of FMUSP and the Hospital das Clínicas of FMUSP, as Acting President of the Deliberative Council (Jan/2011 to Aug/2013), and also served as Clinical Director of the Hospital das Clínicas (2007 to 06/01/2010). He served on the Congregation of FMUSP (Vice-President, Jan/2011 - Dec/2014) and on the Board of Directors of the São Paulo State Cancer Institute - Octavio Frias de Oliveira (Vice-President, Jan/2011 - Aug/2014).
