He is a Fellow of the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering (IUSBSE), an international recognition for outstanding contributions to the field of biomaterials.He holds a B.Sc. (1989) and M.Sc. (1994) in Materials Engineering from the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering Materials and Processes from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP, 2002). He completed postdoctoral fellowships at UNICAMPs School of Medicine (2002), the Institute of Polymer Science and Technology (ICTP-CSIC) in Madrid (2010), and the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of California Davis (2020).At UFRGS, he has served as Chair of the Materials Engineering Department and as Coordinator of the Undergraduate Program in Materials Engineering. He was Treasurer, Secretary, Vice-President, and President of the Latin American Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs (SLABO), and is currently a member of its Advisory Board.He coordinates Labiomat the Biomaterials Laboratory at UFRGS, which is part of the Health Technology Cluster of Southern Brazil (Medical Valley RS), and is a member of the Steering Committee of the National Network for Medical-Dental Equipment and Components (SIBRATEC). He serves as editor for several scientific journals, including the Juniper Online Journal of Material Science, The Scientific Journal of Surface Chemistry, and Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology. He is a frequent reviewer for national and international journals and an ad hoc consultant for various agencies such as FAPEMIG, ANEEL, the Science and Technology Foundation, and the Research and Graduate Council of UESC (Bahia).His scientific output includes hundreds of peer-reviewed publications and dozens of patent applications. He has supervised numerous undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students. His pioneering research contributions include:Fiber-reinforced calcium phosphate cements;Double-setting calcium phosphate cements;Surface coatings on titanium and its alloys using brush-painting techniques;Use of natural rubber as a binder for metal and ceramic injection molding;Development of implantable absorbable elastomeric blends using natural rubber;Non-aqueous synthesis of hydroxyapatite with natural rubber;Reactive synthesis of calcium phosphate within silicone rubber matrices;Production of polymeric fibers via droplet extrusion in a non-solvent medium.He has received multiple awards, including:Honorable Mention Brazilian Ministry of Health Science and Technology Prize (2002);Best Research Award XIII Young Investigators Meeting of the Montevideo Group of Universities (AUGM, 2005);Recognition by the Cuban Academy of Sciences (20082017);SLABO Congress Awards (2004, 2010, 2018);Best Poster OBI (2015);Merit Trainee Award McGill University and World Biomaterials Congress (2016).ResearcherID:L-7916-2016 (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
