Rubens Machado Jr. is a titular professor in Audiovisual Analysis and Criticism at CTR/ECA-USP, Department of Cinema, Radio and TV, and PPGMPA Graduate Program in Media and Audiovisual Processes, School of Communications and Arts, University of São Paulo, where he has been teaching since 1999 in subjects related to Theory, History, Analysis, and Criticism. In 1982, he graduated in Architecture and Urbanism from FAU-USP and obtained a laurea in Italian Language and Literature from Casa di Dante ICIB-SP. He taught Aesthetics, History of Art, and Architecture at Belas Artes FAU-FEBASP, 1982-86. He earned his Master's degree (1989) and Doctorate (1997) in Arts-Cinema at ECA, supervised by Ismail Xavier; he completed a sandwich scholarship (1991-93) and a Doctorat (1993-99, unfinished) at DERCAV-Paris 3, supervised by Jacques Aumont. In the 1970s, he edited bulletins and participated in the foundation of the São Paulo Federation of Cineclubs and Cineclubefau in 1975, as well as Cinusp in 1977; he was an opposition candidate in the National Council of Cineclubs in 1978. He produced the film "O apito da panela de pressão" (DCE-USP DCE-PUC/SP 1977 16mm) with Grupo Alegria. He edited and collaborated on magazines such as Cine-Olho (RJ-SP 1976-80), L'Armateur (Paris 1992-93), Infos Brésil (Paris 1992-07), praga (SP 1997-00), Sinopse (SP 1999-06), Significação (SP 2006-07), Matrizes (SP 2007-08), Rebeca (SP 2012-15; where he edited the section "Fora de Quadro"), Zagaia (SP 2017-23), Brésil(s) (Paris 2022-); and is a member of the EDUSP Council (2023-). Other journals in which he published include: Educação e Sociedade, Novos Estudos Cebrap, Cinemais, Alceu, Pós-FAU-USP, Folha de S. Paulo, Trópico, Revista Rosa; in Italy: Close-Up: Storie della visione, Oèdipus; in France: Episodic, Cahiers du cinéma; in Ecuador: Ñawi. He was elected to the Management Council of SOCINE (2004-07); there, he created the thematic seminar "Cinema as Art, and Vice-Versa" (2008-15), and edited, with Luciana Araújo and Rosana Soares, two volumes of "Estudos de Cinema SOCINE," VII (2006), VIII (2007). Since 2011, he has led the CNPq research group HECC - History of Experimentation in Cinema and Criticism. He published the book "Walter Benjamin: Historical Experience and Dialectical Images" with Carlos Eduardo Jordão Machado and Miguel Vedda (SP 2015), resulting from colloquia in Buenos Aires, such as the III International Seminar on Memory Politics - Remembering Walter Benjamin: Justice, History, and Truth, at the Haroldo Conti Cultural Center, coordinated by UBA, Paris 8, DAAD, National Memory Archive. He is the author of the book "Contributions to a History of Brazilian Experimental Cinema: Obscure Moments, Critical Challenge" (SP 2020). He has been a curator-researcher for projects such as "Marginália 70: Experimentalism in Brazilian Super-8," Itaú Cultural (2000-03), where he edited the catalog (2001); and "LA/LA: Experimental Media in Latin America," Los Angeles Filmforum/Getty Foundation (2014-19), contributing to the book "Ism, Ism, Ism / Ismo, Ismo, Ismo: Experimental Cinema in Latin America" (Los Angeles 2017). He teaches the course "Brazilian Experimental Cinema (1920-70)" at CUEC-UNAM (Mexico 2008); and its Brazilian version in 18 states (2004-11). He was vice-president of the Artistic Guidance Council from 2009-11 at Paço das Artes and MIS-SP. He coordinated the PPGMPA/ECA from 2014-17. He was elected as the representative of Humanities faculty in the 1st CAD, Chamber of Teaching Activities, Reitoria-USP 2017-18. He studies, publishes, and supervises in the field of Arts, with an emphasis on Brazilian Cinema, History of Cinema, Contemporary Audiovisual, Aesthetics, History of Criticism, Film Analysis, Artistic Vanguard, Experimental Cinema, Art-Cinema, Super-8, Cinema and Society, and Cities in Audiovisual.
