Patricia Avello Nicola has been an outstanding Professor at the Federal University of the São Francisco Valley (UNIVASF) since 2008. Her academic background includes a degree in Biological Sciences (BA) and Biology (BSc) from the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná (1997), PR. He obtained a master's degree in Ecology from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), SP in 2001 and a doctorate in Forestry Engineering, with a focus on Forestry, from the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), PR in 2009.Between 1996 and 1999, he took part in a research project with maned wolves in the Campos Gerais region of the state of Paraná, with financial support from the O Boticário Foundation. Between 2001 and 2005, he was part of a research project on the ecology of the Mono-carvoeiro, also known as the Muriqui do Sul, in the state of Paraná, again funded by the O Boticário Foundation.Between 2003 and 2006, she taught undergraduate courses in Biology, Nursing and Veterinary Medicine at the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná - Toledo Campus, and taught specialization courses at the same institution. In 2006, she joined the Federal University of Mato Grosso - Rondonópolis Campus - where she contributed as a lecturer on the Nursing course. Since 2008, as part of the teaching staff at UNIVASF, she has taught undergraduate courses in Nursing, Medicine, Agricultural and Environmental Engineering, Agronomic Engineering and Biological Sciences.Patricia Avello Nicola has been a permanent professor in the Postgraduate Program in Health and Biological Sciences - interdisciplinary academic master's level - at UNIVASF since 2013. Since 2019, she has also been a collaborating professor in the Postgraduate Program in Animal Science (academic master's and doctorate). She leads the Study and Research Group Center for Conservation and Management of Caatinga Fauna (CEMAFAUNA), demonstrating her commitment to the conservation of fauna and the unique ecosystem of the Caatinga.The relevance of her contributions is backed up by her work as a reviewer for the journals Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine and Neotropical Biology and Conservation. Patricia Avello Nicola is the author of 34 full articles in national and international journals, as well as 2 books and 1 book chapter. She works as a supervisor at undergraduate, master's, doctoral and post-doctoral levels, and during her career has supervised 14 master's dissertations, 11 scientific initiation projects, 6 specialization monographs and 18 undergraduate course completion projects.Over the years, she has taken part in 7 research projects, coordinating 3 of them. Since 2012, Patricia has been coordinating a Fauna Monitoring project in the Northern Northeast, funded by the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development (MIDR). She is also collaborating with Cardiff University on a project to monitor bees in irrigated fruit-growing areas.Dr. Patricia Avello Nicola also coordinates the project to rescue and monitor alligators in urban areas in the municipality of Petrolina and collaborates on a research project into the genomics and evolution of Callithrix jacchus and Callithrix penicillata in the Northeast, in partnership with researchers from the University of Hamburg, USP and UFPE. She also coordinates the Caatinga Fauna Museum project, which aims to bring scientific knowledge closer to the community.Patricia Nicola has a specific interest in understanding the impacts of human disturbances, such as defaunation and forest fragmentation, on the occurrence and distribution of species. As a mother of two, she has also been a Parent in Science ambassador in the Northeast since September 2020, highlighting her commitment to education and equality in the sciences.
