is BS in Civil Engineering (1972), MSc (1981), and PhD (1988), both in Structural Engineering, all at the University of Sao Paulo in Sao Carlos, Sao Paulo State (SP), Brazil. From September 1989 to August 1990 developed a post-doctoral program in the USA, at the Pennsylvania State University (PENN STATE), in State College. Had a grant for master student (1973) and worked with design of reinforced concrete structures (1974 - 1984). Was professor of Concrete Structures in the Pontifical University Catholic of Campinas, SP (1976 to 1984) and in the College of Civil Engineering of São Jose do Rio Preto, SP, both in Brazil (1981). Is professor in the Department of Structural Engineering of the Sao Carlos School of Engineering, University of Sao Paulo at Sao Carlos, Brazil, since 1981, in full time since 1985, where also teaches classes in the graduate program since 1987 for master's and doctoral students. In this Department was pioneer in researches on: yield line theory applied in the design of building slabs, structural masonry, high strength concrete, concrete pavements, structural members of recycled polymers, hollow core slabs, and concrete with expanded polystyrene (EPS). Currently he develops researches regarding basically to the following subjects: reinforced concrete, lightweight concrete with EPS, building structures, and slabs and walls of precast concrete.
