Dr. Tavares graduated in Medicine from the University of São Paulo (USP) in 1991. He completed his residency in Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry of USP from 1993 to 1995 and served as a resident-in-chief in 1996. In 2000, he obtained his Ph.D. in Psychiatry from the University of São Paulo. He lived in Canada during 2001 and 2002, where he conducted postdoctoral research on Pathological Gambling at the University of Calgary. Upon returning to Brazil, he undertook a postdoctoral fellowship in Psychopharmacology from 2003 to 2006. Having passed a public competition, he served as an assistant physician at the Institute of Psychiatry of USP from 2008 to 2011. In 2010, he was approved in a public competition for a tenure position in the Department of Psychiatry in Primary Care. He is currently an Associate Professor at USP. He founded and coordinates the Integrated Outpatient Program for Impulse Control Disorders and Behavioral Addictions (PRO-AMITI), and the Innovation Group for the Development of Technology Solutions in Mental Health (Inova e-Pq) at the Institute of Psychiatry of USP, having published numerous articles and book chapters in this field. His main academic areas of focus include: 1) mental health, public health, and innovation, including the development of technological solutions for primary care; 2) addictions, behavioral addictions, technological dependencies, and gambling disorder; 3) impulse control disorders, impulsivity, and personality.
