Gualda has B.S. in Geology and B.S in Secondary Education (Geology) degrees from Universidade de São Paulo (1998), M.Sc. degree in Mineralogy and Petrology from Universidade de São Paulo (2001), and Ph.D. degree in Geophysical Sciences from The University of Chicago (2007). He currently is Professor of Earth Environmental Sciences at Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN, USA). He has experience in Geosciences, especially in Igneous Petrology, Volcanology, and Mineralogy. His main interests are in supereruptions and the magma bodies from which they form, silicic magmatism in volcanic and plutonic settings, textural analysis of rocks using x-ray tomography, and microscopy and microanalysis of volcanic glass and minerals.
