Matheus de Freitas Fernandes-Pedrosa holds a degree in Pharmacy from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN, 1999) and a Ph.D. in Biotechnology from the University of São Paulo (USP, 2005). He served as a Tenured Scientific Researcher at the Butantan Institute in São Paulo, working in the Immunochemistry Laboratory (20042006). He is a Full Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at UFRN and has held a CNPq Research Productivity Fellowship since 2009, currently at level 1B. He is accredited in the Graduate Programs in Pharmaceutical Sciences (PPgCF), Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (PPgBBM), and Technological Innovation in Medicines (PPgDITM) at UFRN. He served as Coordinator of the PPgCF-UFRN (20152019), Vice-Coordinator of the PPgDITM (20212023), and Deputy Head of the Department of Pharmacy at UFRN (20092011). He was Vice-President of the Brazilian Society of Toxinology (SBTx) from 2015 to 2017. He currently leads a research group of 17 members, including undergraduate research fellows, masters and Ph.D. students, and 2 postdoctoral researchers. He has supervised 18 Ph.D. theses, 23 masters dissertations, 40 undergraduate research projects, and 5 postdoctoral fellowships. He coordinates and/or collaborates on research projects and serves as an ad hoc reviewer for national and international funding agencies such as CNPq, CAPES, FINEP, and Brazilian state foundations. He was Executive Manager of the BIO INOVA/UFRN Business Incubator (20202022). He is a permanent member of the Ethics Committee on Animal Use at UFRN (CEUA/UFRN, 2021present) and of the Deliberative Council of the UFRN Research Support Foundation (FUNPEC, 2024present). In 2024, he was a member of the committee responsible for reviewing the global goals of UFRN's Institutional Development Plan (PDI). He is also a member of the National Institute of Science and Technology for Positive Health Industrial Complex 4.0 INCT TEC.CIS 4.0. In 2025, he was appointed as an alternate member of the Technical Chamber on Medicines (CATEME) of the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency Anvisa (Ordinance No. 854/2025) and as a member of the Anvisa Working Group on Vaccines Against Arboviruses (Ordinance No. 861/2025). He has extensive experience in Biotechnology, with an emphasis on scorpion-derived peptides (transcriptomics, proteomics, structural characterization, and biological activity), antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), snake-derived proteins (biological activity and anti-venom natural products), inflammation, immunobiologicals (sera and vaccines), and patents of biotechnological products and processes. He holds six granted patents from the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI). He maintains international collaborations with the Laboratory of Bacterial Communication and Anti-infectious Strategies at the Université de Rouen Normandy, France; the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology at the University of Granada, Spain; the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology at the University of Seville, Spain; and the Institute of Tropical Medicine Department of Molecular Infection Dynamics at Nagasaki University, Japan.
